How an electronics manufacturer uses Carrot to link waste metrics to continuous improvement
Prior to deploying Carrot, GTK’s waste management system amounted to two skip bins: one for general waste and the other for recycling. While the legacy system allowed for sustainable waste management practices, the binary data from GTK’s waste hauler lacked the granularity that would unlock the next level of process optimisation.
By tracking the volume and destination of general, food, dry mixed recycling and other mainstream waste categories alongside mixed metals, electronic cabling, components and WEEE waste (total of 10 streams now tracked via Carrot), GTK is now equipped with insights that inform business process optimisation. For example, knowledge of fluctuations in electronic waste can be attributed to late alterations to customer orders, quality control, damage in the production process, or others.
GTK is a world-class provider of custom and high-performance electronic solutions. As part of the publicly listed Volex Group (LSE: VLX), GTK is responsible for the bottom-up approach to Volex’s sustainability commitments via the Volex Factory Sustainability Framework. GTK follows the ISO 14001 standard on environmental management systems (including waste).
In alignment with its Kaizen-inspired approach to continuous improvement, GTK was introduced to Carrot in Q1 2025 by its landlord, L&G, which had enjoyed succeeses using Carrot in other portfolio assets.
In H1 2025, GTK’s negotiations with, and deployment of, Carrot were undertaken, including the ordering of equipment, installation and staff training. June 2025 was GTK’s first month generating meaningful data from the Carrot platform.
Frank Henning, Logistics & Facilities Manager for GTK UK says: “To GTK, sustainability is more than just reporting. By adopting a Kaizen approach to continuous improvement, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative tools, solutions and relationships that allow us to not only measure and manage waste, but also to integrate insights into the ways of working across our organisation.
Since being introduced to Carrot by L&G in early-2025, we have enjoyed a substantially greater granularity of our waste data which has informed decision making at multiple levels. Now, our entire workforce uses Carrot.
We are looking forward to leveraging the months of data collected thus far to increase our recycling rate to 70-75%. This serves not only to improve our environmental performance but also to cater to the growing demands of the market to offer a minimal environmental footprint for our products and services.”
